Southern California Edison Installing Smart Meters
Southern California Edison has installed One Million "SmartConnect" or Smart Meters as of July 2010. Their plan is to install a total of five million smart meters by 2012. This move is a big step towards the future "Smart Grid," which will replace our nation's aging electric power grid.
Smart meters will help SCE and it's customers monitor power use more effectively, allowing better conservation efforts, and help to avoid large scale blackouts from grid overload.
Residential and commercial Edison customers will be able to monitor their power use in hourly and 15 minute intervals respectively, through their online accounts.
Gone are the days where an Edison employee had to physically check each meter, as this information is now automatically communicated to Edison through a wireless network.
